Funding: SFG Call Ideen!Reich (SFG, 2024)
Start Date: 2024
Description: This project implements LoRaWAN-based agricultural testbeds to optimize environmental monitoring and develop IoT-enabled solutions for smart agriculture.
Project Coordinator: Ivona Brandić

Explaining the Increasing Energy Consumption of IT Infrastructures (TRUST!)

Funding: TRUST! Science Communication for the Next Generation (FWF/ÖAW, 2023)
Start Date: 2024
Description: TRUST! explores the energy consumption of IT infrastructures, focusing on AI models, cloud computing, and large-scale data processing. The project aims to raise awareness about their environmental impact and promote sustainable computing practices.
Project Coordinator: Ivona Brandić

Satellite-based Monitoring of Livestock in the Alpine Region (Virtual Shepherd)

Funding: FFG Austrian Space Applications Programme ASAP 2022 (2023-2025)
Start Date: 2023
Description: Virtual Shepherd integrates satellite-based positioning, edge computing, and geospatial AI to support sustainable livestock grazing in the Alpine region. Using GNSS, LoRaWAN, and 4G/5G, it enables fenceless farming, allowing cattle to be guided via smart collars while minimizing conflicts between hikers and livestock. Edge computing processes data locally, reducing bandwidth use and improving system resilience in challenging alpine conditions. The system also detects anomalies in cattle movement, alerting farmers to potential health issues or predator threats.
